Quick answer
Nara Park and Todai-ji sit next to each other, so do them together. The deer roam freely and can get pushy around food. Give Todai-ji's main hall real time. It's an easy trip from Kyoto or Osaka.
Nara is a simple combination on paper: deer and a big temple. In person, the mix of old temples, open green spaces and deer everywhere makes it feel very different from anywhere else.
The short version:
- Nara Park → deer roam freely, no fences.
- Todai-ji → a giant bronze Buddha inside a huge wooden hall.
- They’re right next to each other.
- Easy to reach from Kyoto or Osaka. We went on to Osaka the same day.
The deer
Nara Park has hundreds of deer walking around freely. They come right up to people and wander through the crowds.
- There are deer crackers sold at stands around the park. Buy them there, and don’t feed the deer anything else.
- Some deer bow to people holding crackers. It’s funny every time.
- Once they see food, some get pushy. Don’t tease them, and keep bags and paper away from them.
After a few minutes, it stops feeling like a spectacle. You’re just walking through a park that happens to have deer everywhere.
Todai-ji
Todai-ji houses a massive bronze Buddha inside one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. After many temples, some start to blur together. This one doesn’t. The scale of the hall and the statue takes a minute to sink in.
At the entrance gate, look for the fierce guardian statues. They’re not demons, they protect the temple. More in my guide on shrines vs temples.
Popular things worth knowing about
- The pillar hole in Todai-ji → a wooden pillar with a hole at the base, said to be the size of the Buddha’s nostril. Squeezing through it is believed to bring good luck.
- Kasuga Taisha → a shrine known for its hundreds of stone and bronze lanterns, a short walk from the park.
- Isuien Garden → a quiet garden close to Todai-ji.
How to plan it
- Do the park and Todai-ji together. They’re a short walk apart.
- Give Todai-ji real time inside.
- From Kyoto or Osaka, it’s a straightforward train ride.
- Pair it with Osaka, like we did, if you’re heading that way.
If you’re travelling with someone who’s getting tired of temples, the deer give Nara a completely different energy.
